Choosing wardrobes

How many doors do you need?

The number of doors is really a question of width. Each door is usually around 1.5 ft wide, and a hanging section needs a depth of roughly 22 to 24 inches so hangers do not catch the doors. These are typical sizes; we build to your wall.

3 doorabout 4.5 ftOne adult with a full wardrobe, or a couple who travel light

Check the height of your ceiling and the width of your stairs and doors before you choose a tall wardrobe. Ours are made in sections so they fit through standard doorways.

Inside matters more than outside

A good almari is planned from the inside. Tell us how you store clothes and we will divide the space:

  • Long hanging for shalwar kameez, suits and coats.
  • Double hanging (two rails) for shirts and trousers.
  • Shelves for folded clothes, bedding and razais.
  • Drawers for small items, with solid wood runners or metal slides.
  • A locker for documents and jewellery.
  • A full-length mirror inside or outside a door.

Free-standing or built in?

This page is for free-standing wardrobes: pieces of furniture you can move to a new house. If you want floor-to-ceiling storage fitted wall to wall, our carpenters design and build custom wardrobes after a home measurement visit in Islamabad or Rawalpindi.

Woods

  • Sheesham: hard and handsome for doors and frames. Solid Sheesham parts carry the 50-year Sheesham wood guarantee.
  • Kail: light and lower in cost, a sensible choice for wardrobe carcasses and interiors when treated and kept dry.
  • Diyar: light, straight-grained, with very durable heartwood.
  • Akhrot: for a dark, rich grain on the doors.

Doors, hinges and finish

Hinged doors are traditional and give full access to the inside. Sliding doors save space in front of the wardrobe in tight rooms, but only half the interior is open at a time. We fit solid wood or panelled doors, carved Chinioti panels, or a mirror panel on one door. Good hinges and runners matter as much as the wood; ask us which hardware a design uses. Choose a polish shade that matches your bed so the room reads as one set.

Care

Keep wardrobes a few inches away from outside walls that get damp in the monsoon, and leave the doors open on dry days to air the inside. Do not overload single shelves; spread heavy bedding across several.

Match the room

A wardrobe in the same wood and polish as your bed and dressing table pulls the room together; see bed sets. For a design from a photo, use custom furniture.

Frequently asked questions

2 door, 3 door or 4 door: which wardrobe size do I need?

Think in width: a 2 door almari is about 3 feet wide and suits one person or a child's room; a 3 door is about 4.5 feet; a 4 door is about 6 feet and suits most couples. Measure your wall, ceiling height and the doors it must pass through, and we will build to fit.

Built-in or free-standing wardrobe: which is better?

A built-in wardrobe uses every inch of the wall up to the ceiling and suits a home you own and plan to stay in. A free-standing wardrobe costs less to change, moves with you and suits rented homes. We make both: free-standing in the shop and built-in through our carpentry service.

Can the wardrobe have a mirror and a dressing unit?

Yes. We can fit a full-length mirror on the outside or inside of a door, and build a dressing section with a mirror, drawers and a small shelf into one end of a wardrobe. In smaller rooms this saves the floor space of a separate dressing table.

Kail or Sheesham: which wood is better for a wardrobe?

Sheesham is harder and more durable and looks richer on doors; its solid parts carry our 50-year wood guarantee. Kail is light and lower in cost and works well for carcasses and interiors if kept dry. Many clients choose Sheesham doors with a Kail interior to balance cost and looks.

Will a large wardrobe fit up my stairs?

Our wardrobes are made in sections and assembled in the room, so they pass through normal doors and staircases. If your stairs are unusually narrow or turn sharply, send us the measurements before we build and we will split the design into smaller sections.
