Choosing bunk beds
Bunk bed or bunker bed?
They are the same thing. "Bunker bed" and "double decker bed" are local names for a bunk bed: two beds stacked one above the other on a shared frame. They save a full bed's worth of floor space, which is why they are popular for siblings sharing a room and for hostels.
What makes a bunk bed safe
A bunk bed is the one piece of furniture where joinery is a safety issue, not a style choice. When you compare designs, check these points:
- Guard rails on all four sides of the top bunk, with the top of the rail well above the mattress so a sleeping child cannot roll over it. Use the mattress thickness the bed was designed for.
- A fixed ladder that is bolted to the frame, with flat, wide steps.
- Solid wood posts and slats, with bolted joints that can be re-tightened.
- No gaps where a child's head or limbs could be trapped.
- Rounded edges and a smooth, sealed finish.
Safety bodies such as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission advise that children under six should not sleep on the top bunk. Teach children not to play or hang things on the rails.
Wooden or iron bunk bed?
Iron bunk beds are lighter and often cheaper, but welded joints can crack, and metal frames tend to squeak and feel cold. A solid wood bunk bed is heavier and more stable, stays quiet, and every bolt can be re-tightened as the years pass. It also looks like furniture in a family home rather than a hostel.
Sizes
Most bunk beds take two 3 x 6.5 ft (36 x 78 in) single mattresses. We can also build for 3.5 ft wide mattresses, with a wider bottom bunk, or with drawers and a trundle underneath. Check your ceiling height: the child on top needs room to sit up.
Split into two singles
Many of our designs can be separated into two single beds when the children grow up or move into separate rooms. Ask for this when you order so the posts are made to stand alone.
Which wood
- Sheesham: hard and strong, our first choice for a frame that carries a child up high. Solid Sheesham parts carry the 50-year Sheesham wood guarantee.
- Kail: lighter and lower in cost; we use heavier sections when building bunks in Kail.
Delivery and custom builds
We deliver and fit bunk beds across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and check that the bed stands level on your floor. For hostels, triple bunks or built-in bunks for a small room, our carpenters or a custom furniture request are the right route. More bed types are on the beds page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bunk bed and a bunker bed?
There is no difference. 'Bunker bed' and 'double decker bed' are local names for a bunk bed: two beds stacked on one frame. Whichever name you use, look for full guard rails on the top bunk, a fixed ladder and a solid wood or well-welded frame.
Wooden vs iron bunk bed: which is safer?
Both can be safe if well made. A solid wood bunk bed is heavier and more stable, stays quiet, and its bolted joints can be re-tightened for years. Iron bunk beds are lighter and often cheaper, but welds can crack and frames can squeak. Check the guard rails and ladder on either type.
What weight can the top bunk hold?
It depends on the design, the wood and the slat spacing, so we do not quote one figure for every bed. Tell us who will sleep on top (a child, a teenager or an adult in a hostel) and we will size the posts, rails and slats for that use and confirm it in writing.
Can a bunk bed be split into two single beds?
Many of our designs can, if you ask when ordering. We make the posts so each bed stands on its own, and add a matching headboard where needed. It is a good choice for siblings who will move into separate rooms later.
From what age can a child sleep on the top bunk?
Safety bodies such as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission advise that children under six should not sleep on the top bunk. Older children should be taught to use the ladder, never to play on the rails, and to keep the top bunk clear of loose items.
