Sheesham vs Kail: an honest comparison

These are the two woods buyers in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ask us about most. One is a dense Punjab hardwood, the other a light pine from the northern hills. Neither is “better” for everything; here is how they really compare, using published figures wherever they exist.

The short answer

  • Choose Sheesham for beds, dining tables, chairs, bed sets and anything you want to hand down: it is far harder, heavier and naturally termite-resistant in the heartwood.
  • Choose Kail for doors, wardrobes, panelling and light furniture where value and low weight matter more, kept indoors and treated against termites.

Strength and weight

Sheesham averages about 770 kg/m³ with a Janka side hardness of 1,660 lbf, and a bending strength (modulus of rupture) of 97.5 MPa (Wood Database). That is why a Sheesham dining chair survives years of being tipped back, and why a Sheesham bed can be bolted and unbolted through several house moves.

For Kail, we could not find a reliable published density or hardness, so we do not quote one. What is certain is that it is a light, soft conifer, much lighter than Sheesham. In practice, Kail furniture is made with thicker legs, rails and shelves to carry the same load, and it marks more easily from knocks and toys.

Durability and termites

This is the biggest practical difference. Sheesham heartwood is rated durable to very durable against decay (Wood Database), and in a Pakistani study it was the most resistant of ten local woods to the subterranean termite Heterotermes indicola (Pakistan Journal of Zoology, 2017). It is still not termite-proof: wood in damp ground was attacked within eight years in a US field test (USDA Forest Service).

Kail is described as “durable under cover but non-durable in exposed conditions”, and “easy to treat with preservatives” (World Agroforestry). It has no natural termite resistance worth relying on, so it must be treated and kept away from damp walls and floors.

Looks and finish

Sheesham's golden to reddish brown heartwood and interlocked grain are the look most people picture when they think of Chinioti furniture. It polishes to a deep shine and warms with age. It also carves crisply, which is why carved headboards are almost always Sheesham.

Kail is pale, with visible knots and the occasional resin pocket. It takes paint and stain well once sealed, so it suits painted wardrobes, modern doors and children's furniture. Stained dark, it can resemble Sheesham in a photo, but not in the hand.

Price and value

Kail is the value choice: real solid wood at a lower price than any hardwood. Sheesham sits at the premium end, because the timber is dense, seasoning takes time and supply is under pressure from shisham dieback. Over a lifetime, a Sheesham bed or dining set is often the better value, because it outlasts several cheaper ones.

Prices move with timber rates, so ask us to quote the same design in both woods and decide with real numbers.

When to choose Sheesham

  • Master beds and bed sets, especially jahez furniture meant to last a lifetime.
  • Dining tables and chairs that take daily knocks.
  • Carved Chinioti pieces and anything with fine detail.
  • Ground-floor rooms or homes where termites have been a problem (with the building treated too).
  • When you want our 50-year wood guarantee.

When to choose Kail

  • Internal doors, frames and wall panelling.
  • Wardrobes and built-in wardrobes, especially painted ones.
  • Children's single beds and study tables that may be replaced as they grow.
  • Guest-room furniture used a few weeks a year.
  • When you want solid wood rather than board on a tighter budget.

If you need durability without Sheesham's weight, also consider Diyar, whose heartwood is very durable.

What to watch out for

  • “Sheesham” fronts on cheaper carcasses. A Sheesham face on Kail or board sides is common. Check drawer sides, back panels and the underside.
  • Sapwood sold as Sheesham. The pale outer band of a Sheesham log is not durable. A little on a hidden face is normal; structural parts should be heartwood.
  • “Kail” that is something else. Kail is often confused with Partal, which is a different tree (Abies pindrow, Punjab Forest Department).
  • Untreated Kail. Ask whether the wood has been treated against termites, and with what.
  • No written specification. Ask for the wood of each part on the quotation and invoice. We put it in writing as standard.

Sheesham vs Kail: common questions

Which is better, Sheesham or Kail?

For beds, dining tables and anything you want to last for generations, Sheesham: it is a dense hardwood (about 770 kg/m³, 1,660 lbf Janka) with naturally termite-resistant heartwood. Kail is better value for doors, wardrobes, panelling and light furniture kept indoors. They suit different jobs.

Is Kail cheaper than Sheesham?

Yes. Kail is the value option among the woods we use, and Sheesham is at the premium end. The gap varies with timber prices and the design, so ask us to quote the same piece in both woods.

Is Kail strong enough for a bed?

Yes, for a well-made bed with properly sized rails, especially a single or guest bed. Kail is softer than Sheesham, so it dents more easily and needs heavier sections. For a master bed that will be moved and used for decades, Sheesham is the stronger choice.

Does Kail get termites?

Kail is not naturally termite-resistant and should be treated. Sheesham heartwood is naturally resistant: it was the most resistant of ten local woods in a Pakistani study (Pakistan Journal of Zoology, 2017), though no wood is termite-proof.

Can Kail be polished to look like Sheesham?

Kail can be stained to a darker colour, and the result can look good. It is still Kail: lighter, softer and not termite-resistant. Look at an unfinished edge, feel the weight, and make sure the invoice names the wood of each part.
