Choosing solid wood beds
What a "full wooden bed" really means
Many beds sold as wooden are part wood, part board: a wooden headboard over an MDF or chipboard base, or wooden legs on a laminated frame. A full wooden bed, the way we make it, uses solid wood for every structural part: headboard frame, side rails, footboard, legs and the slats that carry the mattress. If any part of a design is board (for example, the base of a drawer), we tell you before you order.
How to check a bed is solid wood
- Look at the end grain. Solid wood shows growth rings on cut ends; board shows a uniform fibre or chip core.
- Check the edges. A laminated edge band or a repeating printed grain points to board.
- Feel the weight. Solid hardwood beds are heavy; Sheesham especially.
- Ask for the invoice to name the wood. Our invoices list the wood for each piece.
Carved or modern
Carved Chinioti headboards are the craft Chiniot is known for: floral and geometric patterns cut by hand into Sheesham or Akhrot. They suit traditional homes and bridal rooms. Modern designs keep the lines plain and let the grain carry the look: panel headboards, slatted backs and low platform frames.
The woods we use
| Wood | Density | Janka hardness | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo) | about 770 kg/m3 | 1,660 lbf | Golden to reddish brown, hard, stable | Beds you want to keep for decades |
| Akhrot (walnut, Juglans regia) | about 640 kg/m3 | 1,220 lbf | Rich brown grain, carves beautifully | Statement and carved beds |
| Teak (Tectona grandis) | about 655 kg/m3 | 1,070 lbf | Golden, oily, very durable; imported | Clients who want teak specifically |
| Diyar (deodar, Cedrus deodara) | about 560 kg/m3 | not published | Light, straight grain, durable heartwood | Lighter frames and panels |
| Kail (blue pine, Pinus wallichiana) | light softwood | not published | Pale, soft, lower cost | Simpler beds, children's rooms |
Figures from the Wood Database and World Agroforestry; durability ratings apply to heartwood only. Sapwood of every species is less durable, which is why our guarantee covers Sheesham heartwood.
Seasoning: the step you cannot see
Freshly cut timber is full of water. If it is made into a bed too soon, it shrinks as it dries in your home, and joints open, panels crack and drawers stick. We season our timber before it is cut to size, so the wood has already done most of its moving by the time it reaches the workshop bench. Ask any furniture maker how their wood is seasoned; it tells you a lot about the bed.
Guarantee
Solid Sheesham heartwood parts carry our 50-year Sheesham wood guarantee: IBF's own commercial guarantee, with clear conditions.
Care
Dust with a dry cloth, keep the bed out of strong direct sun, use felt pads on tiled floors, keep it a few inches from damp walls in the monsoon, and re-polish when the finish dulls.

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a wooden bed in Pakistan?
It depends mainly on the wood, the size and the amount of carving. A plain Kail single costs far less than a hand-carved Sheesham or Akhrot king. Each design here shows its price, and for custom changes we quote on WhatsApp after you share a photo and your mattress size.
What does 'full wooden bed' mean?
It means every structural part is solid wood: headboard frame, side rails, footboard, legs and the slats under the mattress. Many beds sold as wooden use a board base under a wooden headboard. We tell you clearly if any part of a design, such as a drawer bottom, is board.
How can I tell if a bed is solid wood or MDF?
Look at a cut end: solid wood shows growth rings, board shows a uniform fibre or chip core. Watch for laminated edge strips or a printed grain that repeats. Solid hardwood beds are also noticeably heavy. And ask the seller to name the wood on the invoice, as we do.
Which wood is best for a wooden bed?
Sheesham is the traditional choice: hard (about 1,660 lbf Janka), stable once seasoned, and termite-resistant in the heartwood, though no wood is termite-proof. Akhrot is chosen for its grain and carving. Kail is the budget option and should be kept dry. We help you weigh looks, budget and use.
Can I get a wooden bed with storage?
Yes. Most of our wooden bed designs can be made with a lift-up box base or with side drawers. Storage adds weight and cost, and drawers need about 2 feet of clear floor beside the bed, so decide before we start building the base.
