Choosing sheesham beds
Why Sheesham for a bed
Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo), also called shisham or taali, is the wood Chiniot's furniture craft was built on. The reasons are practical:
- Hard and heavy. It averages about 770 kg/m3 with a Janka hardness of 1,660 lbf (Wood Database), so it resists dents and holds bolts tightly for years.
- Durable heartwood. Its heartwood is rated durable to very durable against decay (Wood Database).
- Naturally termite-resistant. In a Pakistani lab and field study of ten local woods, Sheesham was the most resistant to the subterranean termite Heterotermes indicola (Pakistan Journal of Zoology, 2017). Resistant does not mean termite-proof, so keep furniture off damp walls and floors.
- Stable. It shrinks relatively little as it dries, which helps joints stay tight once the wood is properly seasoned.
- Beautiful. Golden brown to deep reddish brown, with a grain that takes polish and carving well.
Heartwood, sapwood and real Sheesham
A Sheesham log has two parts: the dark heartwood at the centre and a pale, straw-coloured band of sapwood under the bark. Durability belongs to the heartwood; sapwood of any species is not durable. That is why we build structural parts from seasoned heartwood, and why our guarantee covers heartwood.
To check that a bed is real Sheesham, look for the golden-to-reddish colour with darker streaks, feel the weight, and look at a cut end for growth rings. Many "Sheesham" pieces in the market are stained lighter woods or board. Our invoices name the wood, and if any part invoiced as solid Sheesham turns out to be another wood or board, the guarantee covers replacing it.
Our 50-year Sheesham wood guarantee
Every piece we build in solid Sheesham carries our own commercial guarantee on the wood. In short:
- If a solid Sheesham heartwood part we supplied fails within 50 years of delivery through rot, termite or borer damage starting in the wood, or a structural crack in the timber, we repair or replace that part at no cost for labour or wood.
- Polish and finish are covered for 1 year.
- Register your purchase on WhatsApp within 30 days of delivery, and report a problem within 30 days of noticing it.
- It applies to indoor domestic use, with inspection by our team in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. It is not transferable and there is no cash refund.

Caring for Sheesham
Keep it indoors and away from standing water and strong direct sun. Dust with a dry cloth, re-wax or polish when the finish dulls, keep legs off wet floors in the monsoon, and check walls near the bed for termite mud tubes.

Is Sheesham wood good for furniture?
Yes. Sheesham is hard (about 1,660 lbf Janka), averages around 770 kg/m3, and its heartwood is rated durable to very durable (Wood Database). It is stable once seasoned, holds joints well and takes polish and carving beautifully, which is why Chiniot's furniture craft is built on it.
How long does Sheesham wood last?
Properly seasoned Sheesham heartwood kept indoors can last generations; there is no controlled study measuring furniture lifespan, but its durability rating supports long life. We back our solid Sheesham furniture with a 50-year wood guarantee, with conditions set out on our Sheesham guarantee page.
Is Sheesham wood termite resistant?
Its heartwood is naturally termite-resistant: in a Pakistani study of ten local woods it was the most resistant to the termite Heterotermes indicola. It is not termite-proof, especially where furniture touches damp walls or floors. Keep pieces a few inches off walls and check for mud tubes.
How can I identify original Sheesham wood?
Real Sheesham heartwood is golden brown to reddish brown with darker streaks, feels heavy, and shows growth rings on a cut end. A pale straw band is sapwood. Painted or uniformly stained surfaces, light weight and board cores are warning signs. Ask the seller to name the wood on the invoice.
Is Sheesham the same as rosewood?
Sheesham is sometimes called Indian rosewood, but its status as a true rosewood is disputed; it is lighter and less dense than East Indian rosewood, which is a different species (Dalbergia latifolia). Taali or tali is simply the Punjabi name for Sheesham.
What does your 50-year guarantee cover?
It covers solid Sheesham heartwood parts named on your invoice against rot, termite or borer damage starting in the wood, and structural cracks in the timber, for 50 years from delivery. We repair or replace the part. Polish is covered for 1 year. Fabric, foam, glass, fittings and board parts are excluded.
