Bed sizes in Pakistan, in feet, inches and centimetres

Beds in Pakistan are sold by mattress size, in feet, and the names are used loosely: one shop's “double” is another's queen. Here are the sizes we see and build most often, converted to inches and centimetres, with the room space each one needs.

Mattress sizes as commonly sold in Pakistan. Pakistani vendors do not all agree, especially on double and king lengths, so always confirm the size in inches before you order a frame or a mattress. Centimetres are rounded.

Mattress size vs frame size

Every size above is the mattress. The bed frame is always larger, because the side rails, footboard and headboard add to it. How much larger depends on the design: a slim platform bed adds little, while a carved Chinioti headboard or a padded poshish headboard adds more.

So plan the room for the frame, not the mattress. Ask us for the outer frame size of any design before you order, and we will send it in feet and inches.

King size beds

A king size bed in Pakistan is built around a 6 ft wide mattress. The two common lengths are 6.5 ft (72 x 78 in) and 7 ft (72 x 84 in). The 6 x 6.5 ft king is the size most couples buy; the 7 ft length is worth it if either of you is tall or your feet hang over today.

Choose king if two adults share the bed, if a child often joins you, or if one of you moves a lot at night. See our king size beds.

Queen and double beds

This is where names cause the most confusion. Mattress makers use double for a narrower size, about 54 x 75 in (roughly 4.5 x 6.25 ft), while queen is usually 5 x 6.5 ft (60 x 78 in). In daily speech, many people say “double bed” for any bed that sleeps two, even a king.

A queen gives two adults a comfortable night in a room that cannot take a king. A true double suits one adult, a guest room, or a compact room. “Full size” is the American name for a double. See our double and queen beds.

Single beds

Single beds are built for 3 ft (36 x 78 in) or 3.5 ft (42 x 78 in) wide mattresses, usually 6.5 ft long. The 3 ft single is the standard for children and guest rooms; the 3.5 ft wide single gives a teenager or an adult more room.

Two 3 ft singles side by side cover the same footprint as a 6 x 6.5 ft king mattress, which makes a pair of singles a flexible choice for guest rooms. Where floor space is tight, a bunk bed stacks two singles in one footprint. See our single beds.

What about super king?

“Super king” is not a fixed size in Pakistan. Some sellers use it for any bed wider than the usual 6 ft king, others for a 6 x 7 ft long king. In the UK, where the name comes from, a super king is 180 x 200 cm, which is almost exactly the Pakistani 6 x 6.5 ft king.

If you want something bigger than a king, ignore the name and ask for the size in inches. We can build a frame wider or longer than standard, as long as you have, or can buy, a mattress to match.

What room size you need

As a rule of thumb, leave about 2 to 2.5 ft on each side of the bed for bedside tables and walking, and about 2.5 ft at the foot. Add the extra length of the headboard. The estimates below follow that rule.

Approximate room sizes for each bed size
BedTight but workableComfortable, with two side tables
King (6 x 6.5 ft)about 10 x 10 ftabout 12 x 12 ft
Queen (5 x 6.5 ft)about 9 x 10 ftabout 11 x 11 ft
Double (about 4.5 x 6.25 ft)about 8.5 x 9.5 ftabout 10 x 10 ft
Single (3 x 6.5 ft), one side against a wallabout 6 x 9.5 ftabout 8 x 10 ft
Our rule-of-thumb estimates, not a standard. Doors, windows, wardrobes and a dressing table all change the answer, so measure the walls and mark the bed on the floor with tape before you decide.
  • Storage drawers under a bed need about 2 ft of clear floor beside it to open fully.
  • A hinged wardrobe needs clear floor in front of it about as wide as its doors; sliding doors need none.
  • In a room under about 11 ft wide, a queen instead of a king gives back a foot of floor.

Getting the mattress fit right

  1. Measure the mattress itself, width and length in inches, rather than trusting the label. Foam mattresses can differ slightly from their nominal size.
  2. Tell us the thickness. Mattress thickness and the height of the side rails together decide how high you sit and how much headboard shows above the pillows.
  3. Decide on storage early. A lift-up box base holds quilts, razais and seasonal clothes; side drawers suit things you reach for daily. The base is built differently for each, so choose before we start.
  4. Buying both? Choose the mattress first, or at least its exact size, then the frame. A frame can be built to any mattress; a mattress cannot be made to fit a frame that is slightly off.

Imported mattress sizes

Imported mattresses follow their own country's sizes, which do not match Pakistani names. For reference:

Bed size questions

What is the size of a king size bed in Pakistan in feet?

A king size bed in Pakistan is usually built for a 6 x 6.5 ft mattress (72 x 78 inches, about 183 x 198 cm). A longer 6 x 7 ft version (72 x 84 inches) is also common for tall sleepers. The frame is a few inches wider and longer than the mattress.

What is the standard double bed size in Pakistan?

Sources disagree. One Pakistani mattress maker gives about 54 x 75 inches (roughly 4.5 x 6.25 ft) for a double, while 60 x 78 inches (5 x 6.5 ft) is usually called queen. In everyday speech, 'double bed' can even mean any bed for two, including a king. Always confirm the size in inches.

What is the single bed size in Pakistan?

A standard single mattress is 3 x 6.5 ft (36 x 78 inches, about 91 x 198 cm). A wide single of 3.5 x 6.5 ft (42 x 78 inches) suits teenagers and adults.

Is a queen bed the same as a double bed?

Not quite. A queen is usually 5 x 6.5 ft (60 x 78 inches), wider and longer than a true double of about 54 x 75 inches. Both sleep two, but a queen is more comfortable for two adults every night.

What room size do I need for a king size bed?

As a rule of thumb, allow about 2 to 2.5 ft on each side and about 2.5 ft at the foot. A room of around 12 x 12 ft takes a king bed with two side tables comfortably. In a room under about 11 ft wide, a queen bed gives back a foot of floor.
